The
Colorado Rockies may finally be ready to make drastic changes and jump-start
the next part of their re-building process.
The
club is finally willing to trade not one, but two of their biggest stars - Troy
Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez, according to a Fox Sports Report. The report
states that other teams around the league have been told by the Rockies front
office that they are ready to listen in on potential trade offers for their
franchise corner stones.
Troy
Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez are each equipped with intriguing but flawed
trade chips. When healthy, Tulowitzki is the best shortstop in all of baseball,
but he’s averaged just 88 games per season over the last three years. He also
has $114 million remaining on a contract that will run through 2021.
Carlos
Gonzalez, a year shy of 30, has just $53 million remaining on a contract that
will last for three more seasons. After playing in 135 games in 2012, he played
just 110 in 2013, and 70 in 2014. His numbers also took a nosedive as he hit a
messily .238 with a .723 OPS.
Both
the New York Yankees and New York Metropolitans have been linked to Tulowitzki
in the past. As a matter of fact, if you listened to sports talk radio in the
tri-state area throughout the summer, the topic of discussion amongst all the
armchair general managers and avid fans revolved around both teams making a
move for the young shortstop.
The
Mets have a surplus of young pitching that could be an intriguing trade asset
for the Colorado Rockies.
And
of course, in controversial fashion, Tulowitzki made a surprise appearance at
Yankee Stadium this past summer to watch his role model Derek Jeter play one
last time. With a hole at shortstop, will the Yankees entertain bringing in
Tulowitzki to be the heir to his role model? Who knows? But one thing is
certain, should they make a move to acquire the star, it’ll cost them their
richest assets in an already weak farm system.
