The New York Rangers next game is ironically scheduled against the Toronto Maple Leaf's on Wednesday March 5th, just hours after the trade deadline- and it seems the most talked about question remains to be whether or not Captain Ryan Callahan will be donning the Red, White, and Blue come game time.
Today, the ongoing feud between Callahan and the Rangers took another shocking turn when Callahan essentially rejected the mutli-year contract extension offered to him by the Blue Shirts. It's been reported that the 28-year old felt the duration and the money of the contract extension offered to him didn't quite meet his expectations and is instead seeking a seven year deal with an upwards annual salary between 6.5 and 7 million dollars per year.
Some notable right wingers who are paid an annual salary a bit less then what Callahan is demanding;
Kyle Okposo (age 25) signed five year extension in 2011- $2,800,000 per year
Timothy Leif 'TJ' Oshie (age 26) signed five year extension in 2012- $4,175,000 per year
Bobby Ryan (age 26) signed five year extension in 2010 -$5,100,000 per year
James Neal (age 26) signed six year extension in 2012 - $5,000,000 per year
Will the Rangers give in to the demands of their captain or will Glen Sather stand pat and trade away their 27th captain in team history?
"Just wait and see, I guess." said Callahan. "Obviously my heart's still here and I want to be here. So we'll see what happens."
