Rock v. Brock 2 At Wrestlemania 31?

Up until early Saturday morning when news broke of Roman Reigns being rushed into emergency surgery to repair a hernia, it seemed as if Reigns v. Brock Lesnar at Wrestlemania 31 was inevitable. Now, with a four to six week rehab stint staring Reigns in the face before he can resume any physical activity barring any set-backs, his title bout at WWE's Grandest Stage is now in limbo.

So who will replace Reigns and challenge Lesnar for the title at Wrestlemania 31 in San Francisco? How about his cousin - Dwayne 'The  Rock' Johnson?

Crazy right? The Rock v Brock Part II.

Well, the interesting thing is, this match was supposed to take place at Wrestlemania 30 last year, but didn't fall through because of a legitimate injury the Rock had suffered at Wrestlemani 29 v. John Cena. The plan was for The Rock to appear on Raw the very next night, only to be attacked by 'The Beast Incarnate' Brock Lesnar, ultimately beginning a long feud that was planned to last up to Wrestlemania 30.

It would have been interesting to see who would have faced the Undertaker if Lesnar was wrestling the Rock instead. I firmly believe the Undertaker's winning streak would have remained in tact unless he faced off against John Cena. Cena could have turned into the ultimate heel if he beat the streak at Wrestlemania instead of Brock, but that's rather here nor there.

The point is, if Vince McMahon goes ahead and pushes the Rock v. Brock at Wrestlemania 31 it has the potential to be one of the biggest matches in WWE history. The Rock has made it clear that he will only come back to the WWE if his match, and of course the money, is even bigger than his last few returns. These two tore the roof down from the Nassau Coliseum during their first encounter at Summer Slam in 2002. A return rematch 12 years in the making would mean big business, as both men are bigger stars now than they were in 2002.

The Rock is expected to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame next year so it's possible this can be his "retirement" match, which is quite unfortunate for all Rock fans because it'll signal a loss to Brock Lesnar who will retain the WWE Championship in this epic rematch.

If I'm on the WWE creative team I would do things a bit differently.  I'd have the Rock defeat Lesnar for the belt at Wrestlemania and hold it through Summer Slam. At the same-time, hopefully a healthy Roman Reigns is back and still regarded as the future of the business, all-the-while still being hyped to super-stardom like he was before his injury. Thus, at Summer Slam Reigns can defeat his cousin for the belt, and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson will pass the torch onto Reigns to start his legacy as one of the greatest super stars in the WWE. Corny, but traditional. One era closing, and another just beginning.
