Shannon Szabados' name and image has been thrown all around the hockey world lately after she carried the Canadian Women's National Team to their second straight Gold Medal victory in Sochi. She even played goalie during an Edmonton Oilers on-ice practice over the trade deadline when they were waiting for the newly acquired Viktor Fastch to arrive from southern California.
Turns out, the hype didn't stop there for Szabados. She took to twitter Friday afternoon to announce she had signed with the Columbus Cottonmouths of the Southern Pacific Hockey League "Well here goes nothing. Heading to the SPHL to join the Cottonmouths for the remainder of their season. See you on the 12th guys #snakes."
The Cottonmouths kept a close eye on Szabados during her time in Sochi.
"I am very excited to get a world class athlete that has competed and has faced high pressured situation." Said Cottonmouths head coach Jerome Bechard. "Shannon has won in every level she had played, in women's hockey or men's hockey."
The 27 year old Edmonton native has played with men before but not at the professional level. She recently played in college on the men's Northern Alberta Institute of Technology team. Before that, she played four years of men's junior hockey in the Alberta Junior Hockey League.
This may be just a publicity stunt, but Szabados is a world class talent and definitely has a competitive resume against male hockey players. It'll be interesting to see how she does when she starts in between the pipes down South.
The Cottonmouths said she'll play when she's comfortable and ready.
