The National Football League handed down one of their most punishable fines in league history last week, as they fined Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch $50,000.
According to sources, the fine was issued to Lynch for failing to speak to members of the media all season long, but wasn't issued to him until this Friday, when he finally spoke to the media for the first time.
Unfortunately for Lynch, his long awaited acknowledgement of the media was too little too late for the NFL, who requires each member of the NFLPA to speak with the media.
My biggest problem here is not the obscurity of Lynch's silence nor is it the extreme fine handed down by the NFL. My problem is timing. The Seahawks are in the midst of starting their post-season and gearing up for a very tough performance against the Saints at home next weekend.
Why couldn't the NFL wait until after the season to issue their fine to Marshawn Lynch? Is it an attempt at distracting the Seahawks? Are they trying to get into the head of Marshawn Lynch?
This has been an ongoing problem in sports for as long as I can remember and I blame reality tv and it's impacts on America. Everyone, (even the NFL for that matter) feels the need to input drama into any situation desirable, even if it's right before playoffs when emotions are at their highest... We've seen it with the NCAA and their desire to investigate the Bernie Fine scenario at Syracuse University just two days before their tip off in 2013 March Madness Tournament. We've seen it when the MLB media rained down Tampa Bay Ray fans and their lack of support for the team right before their October 30th tie breaker game against the Texas Rangers, and now the latest victims - Mr. Marshawn Lynch and the Seattle Seahawks.
