As the GM meetings came to a close we learned one thing about the New York Yankees.
-- That is they are not yet ready to appoint David Robertson as heir to the great Mariano Rivera.
Just when fans were gearing up for the switch from Metallica to Lynyrd Skynyrd and getting ready to watch David Robertson and his knee high socks jog into the pitchers mound from the bullpen for upcoming save situations in 2014, it appears Brian Cashman has other thoughts.
"I'm not sure if Robertson is capable yet. He's never done that before," Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman said. "I think he's earned the right to take a shot at it, and he very well may be the guy. But were not anointing him the guy."
Cashman said one of his top priorities this off season is improving the Pinstripe bullpen by exploring free-agent and trade markets for proven closers as well as other late inning relievers.
He also stated that a final decision as to who will be slated into the closer position on the Yankees Opening Day Roster will not be reached until the tail end of Spring Training.
It's been reported that Brian Cashman has already been contacted by agents representing some of the more prestigious names on the relief pitching market including Joe Nathan, Fernando Rodney, Grant Balfour, and Brian Wilson.
"I'm going to explore every option out there," Cashman said. "Our team has a lot of areas to fill, and the bullpen as a collective is weakened now with the loss of Mariano. We need to improve in that area."
This is going to be one interesting off-season for the Bronx Bombers...
