Well... the Thomas Vanek trade rumors can finally be put on hold, at least for now.
Thomas Vanek became a member of the New York Islanders Sunday evening in a trade that sent Vanek to Long Island in exchange for Matt Moulson, the 2014 NYI first round pick, and the 2015 NYI second round pick.
While many will argue that the Islanders overpaid for Vanek because he comes with a $7,142,857 cap hit and is a UFA next season, I happen to like the deal.
Vanek, a year shy of 30, is an established goal scorer with four goals and five assists in 13 games this season for the Buffalo Sabres. The former 2003 first round pick has a career 254 goals and 243 assists in 598 games, all with the Sabres.
He also brings a combination of size at 6' 2" 217 pounds and leadership, having played in 36 Stanley Cup Playoff games with a combined 20 points (15 G 5A) to a young and talented New York Islanders lineup.
Teaming Thomas Vanek along side John Taveres can be a very exciting tandem to watch going forward.
Though Thomas Vanek is a free-agent at the end of the season, the Islanders can advertise their new arena at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY as well as their young and high calibered roster and try up Vanek long-term...but we'll just have to wait and see.
Vanek is expected to make his Islander debut on Tuesday night against none other than the New York Rangers.
