Treasure Hunt; Pittsburgh Pirates First Winning Season Since '92
AHOY MATEY!
With their 1-0 shutout victory behind 23 year old pitcher Gerrit Cole, the 'Bucs' clinched not only win no. 82, but their first winning season since 1992.
That's right, the math does add up... Gerrit Cole helped the Pirates to their first winning season since he was just two years old.
Pirates manager Clint Hurdle had no special message for his team , nor was there was a champagne celebration to follow the game. In all reality, No. 82 was just another big step towards the franchise goal of making it to the 2013 playoffs.
Non the less, Hurdle did acknowledge the Pirates faithful;
"It's going to touch a lot of people on a lot of different levels. We are aware of it. Everybody is here for a reason, and that's to knock down things we haven't done in a long time."
In the midst of what is considered a great milestone for many fans, let's not overlook the brilliance behind the former no. 1 overall draft pick in Gerrit Cole.
Before Gerrit Cole tossed seven scoreless innings with a career high nine k's to win a pitchers duel against oh yea.... Yu Darvish of the Texas Rangers, the Pirates hadn't had a winning season is as many as two decades.
After the game Cole spoke for many of the young faces on the Pirates roster in a message to the fans when he said;
"We don't really understand what the fans have been through. I know it definitely puts a smile on their face when they see that No. 82 up there. We're extremely happy to be able to make them make them feel like we've got a winning team out there."
Prior to last night's winning-season clincher, the Pirates dropped a season high four games in a row, with their 81st victory coming last Tuesday against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Also, with the last nights victory, the Pirates moved back within one game of the N.L. Central First Place St. Louis Cardinals.
