Rookie Mistake of the Year, The Unforgettable First Hit

Houston Astros Catching Prospect Max Stassi will never forget hit first hit... and not in a good way.

Max Stassi was promoted to the bigs as the Designated Hitter on Tuesday against the Texas Rangers at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, where he collected his first major league hit in the fifth inning with a hard single passed the middle of the infield off of Jason Frasor.

As per baseball tradition, the ball was thrown into the Astros dugout - but no one could have ever prepared for what happened next.

Max Stassi followed up his first big league knock with a baserunning mistake that he claimed he never made before.... and it was quite hilarious (may I add)

Two batters later, Stassi slid safely into second on a ground ball to the pitcher, who then sailed it over Elvis Andrus' head covering the bag. Apparently Stassi thought Andrus caught the ball for a force out at second base, and he began to walk off the bag towards the dugout thinking the inning was over. Ian Kinsler, who caught the wildly thrown ball on the edge of the outfield grass alertly tagged Stassi from behind in no mans land to record the second out of the inning.

But where are you going young man?

"I slid in and lost track of the ball," Stassi said. "I thought [Elvis Andrus] was on second and the ball went past him. That's totally on me, and it's something that'll never happen again in my career. It just so happened on my debut."

To make matters worse, the Astros were up 2-1 at the time, but eventually lost 4-2 and took their seventh straight loss v. the Texas Rangers.

You have to believe that without Tassi's bonehead error, the Astros could have had a chance to tack on some more runs and finally beat the Rangers, but i guess we'll never know.
