Ilya Kovalchuk Seeking a Future Return to the NHL

Despite walking away from a guaranteed $77 million dollars and 12 years left on his contract, 'former' NHL super star Ilya Kovalchuk is already planning a return to the NHL... or so he thinks.

Talks about a future NHL return for Kovalchuk had been looming rampantly since the day after he 'retired' at the old age of 30 and fled to SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL. Non the less, I took each rumor as a grain of salt, significantly because non of the speculation came from Kovalchuk himself. All the talk about his return were via the words his own mother and sister... I guess Russian men hide behind their women.

--Seemingly that all changed.

Around 8:00am eastern standard time, Kovalchuk finally confirmed that an NHL return isn't out of the picture, and the Stanley Cup still remains his ultimate goal;

However, should Kovalchuk commit to coming back stateside, the New Jersey Devils will still maintain his rights, despite the termination of his contract.

Also, all 30 NHL teams will have to vote yes on return. That said If he's not fully committed to playing for the Devils, they'll likely vote against his return to the NHL.

It may take quite a few years to fully wrap up this story, but it's has to potential to have one hell of an ending. Stay tuned.
