Analyzing Potential HHH v. The Rock Match at Wrestlemania 31

Triple H and Dwayne 'the Rock' Johnson recently had a backstage confrontation this past Friday Night during the 15th Anniversary of SmackDown, and it was the highlight of the night for fans across the WWE Universe. It also left many fans debating whether or not these two legends should face off at Wrestlemania 31 in 2015.

The brief segment was one of the most entertaining back-stage skits fans have seen in a while on SmackDown, and while we can see these two iconic figures work at the grandest stage of them all, the questions is this; What is the best approach the WWE Creative team should take in booking this potential rivalry?

HHH is currently the leader of the authority, WWE's corporate heel featuring 'Mr. Money in the Bank' Seth Rollins, Randy Orton, 'the Demon' Kane and of course Stephanie McMahon. Together, HHH and the authority have ruled the company with sheer dominance and a tad bit of collusion for well over a year now, and anyone who crosses the authority always pay's the price - leaving no reason to believe that this doesn't include the 'People's champ', The Rock. But, during the skit the Rock walked straight into Triple H's office anyway and began to reminisce about old times and all their past matches. This walk down memory lane could lead to a future rivalry, with one last match finally proving who the best in the business really is.

This is obviously the clearest way for WWE creative to book this feud. The fact is, nostalgia can go a long way to getting this renewed rivalry over with the fans. The Attitude Era is perhaps the most pinnacle time period in WWE history, where fans from all over the world joined in to witness the Monday Night Wars between WWE and WCW, where McMahon's company ultimately prevailed, thanks in large part to stars like The Rock and HHH.

That said, this feud can be promoted on the nostalgia effect, as a celebration to fans of the companies good ol' days during the attitude era. Seeing the 'Great One' go one-on-one with 'The Game' at Wrestlemania would bring every bit of that history back for fans, and it can certainly provide a great Wrestlemania moment for years to come.

Seeing a match end with a handshake spirited out of mutual respect always seems to be the best Wrestlemania note to end on, but this wouldn't be the exact angle that I would take. If I'm on the WWE Creative Team I'd do things quite differently.

After all, this is indeed the case of two polar opposites, two superstars whose character over the years could not be more different, and right now, they're on completely different levels.

The Rock is the WWE protagonist, and one of the strongest the company has ever seen. Similar to his guest appearance on Monday Night Raw - the Rock has always been able to hold the WWE Universe at large in the palm of his hands during a promo - and he's arguably never been more popular despite having lost his last WWE match to John Cena. Triple H on the other hand is the long-standing WWE antagonist, one of the best heels the company has ever seen. He's long been able to make fans hate him through his words and actions, which includes his current stint as head of the authority.

But - eventually the authority must fall, and though this roll is best cut out for the character of Stone Cold Steve Austin or the lunatic fringe Dean Ambrose - the Rock can be the man to take them down.

Having said that, I would certainly make this match about the 'People's Champ' taking back the WWE for the people and giving the fans and the locker room freedom from the authority. A Wrestlemania loss at the hands of the Rock can signal the end of the Authority for Triple H, and a new story line for the WWE.

The third option I believe WWE Creative can take is sending the fans in a completely unexpected direction entirely. This angle would be similar to a match ending out of mutual respect, but also with a subsequent face-turn for Triple H. Fan's believe the authority will be overthrown, and that very well may be the case, but if not, the authority might implode and that may happen because Triple H decides to change his way of doing business. The magnitude of a Rock v. HHH showdown at Wrestlemania might put HHH back in good graces with the fans, and that may lead to his character change.

This would certainly change the future of WWE's main story-line, as it would end the days of authority oppression. It would cast HHH in a new light, and all that would come as a result of facing the Rock at Wrestlemania.

With the Rock, Stone Cold, HHH and other corner-stone's of the attitude era gearing up for their seat in the WWE Hall of Fame - the timing for a HHH face-turn might finally be right.

Despite what the WWE chooses to do with this potential WWE feud, the main takeaway is The Rock v. Triple H would certainly be a huge main event  match.
