Troy Tulowitzki; the Next New York Yankees Shortstop? Potential Trade Package?

From Derek Sanderson Jeter to Troy Trevor Tulowitzki? Now that would be quite the transition huh? Some may argue that there's no chance in france Brian Cashman can pull something like this off, but I just watched the New Jersey Devils go from the legendary Martin Brodeur to Cory Schneider just one day ago... Point being, nothing is too far fetched in the world of sports.

Why do I think this is quite the possibility? Well, according to Fox Sports reporter Ken Rosenthal, the 29-year old Tulowitzki may very well wan't out of Colorado after this season. He's owed $118 million through 2020 with a club option for 2021, but when is money ever a concern for the Bronx Bombers? This is a price tag the Yankees would be more than willing to absorb in order to replace their captain and solidify the number six hole for much of the future.

Now, before we get too far ahead of ourselves, the Colorado Rockies must first be willing to part ways with the face of their franchise. Should they do so, what kind of trade package will be enough to acquire arguably the best short stop in the game today and what competition would the Yankees face in order to do so?

For starters, let's cross-out the entire N.L. West, including the star studded Los Angeles Dodgers - the Rockies just simply won't trade a super-star within their own division.

Who does that leave?

The Seattle Mariners can use an upgrade at short-stop, but would they have the money to splurge $50 million over the salaries of Robinson Cano and Troy Tulowitzki per year? Doubtful.

The St. Louis Cardinals had been linked to Tulo in the past, but they now have Jhonny Peralta for the next three seasons, which complicates things.

The Boston Red Sox are always a threat to the Yankees when it comes to acquiring new players, but I'm not sure a Tulowitzki deal makes sense for the Red Sox. After all, if there's one thing the Red Sox have a surplus of, it's prospects at the short-stop and third base position. Plus, the Red Sox weren't willing to overspend on Jacoby Ellsbury in the off-season and may not wan't too invest money in Jon Lester either... leaving the door wide open for the New York Yankees.

Now on to my potential 'armchair GM' trade package. According the Rosenthal, the Colorado Rockies are extremely unhappy with the defense of Wilson Rosario behind the plate - enter John Ryan Murphy or Gary Sanchez. Justin Morneau has just one year left on his contract, so let's add Peter O'Brien to the potential package as well.

It's no secret the Rockies can use some pitching help as well. Dellin Betances and/ or Danny Burawa could serve as an instant fix to Colorado's bullpen. Colorado might also be intrigued by the idea of trying to turn Betances back into a starter.. be my guest

The final piece of the puzzle is a starting pitcher with a high potential upside. Ian Clarkin will more than suffice.

Is the combination of one of John Ryan Murphy/ Gary Sanchez and Dellin Betances/ Danny Burawa along with Peter O'Brien and Ian Clarkin a lot? Absolutely, but the Yankees can still manage to have Colorado pick up part of Tulowitzki's tab as well.

Times are a' changin' in the MLB and "you have to give to get."Tulowitzki will provide the Yankees with a power hitting short stop , who they can protect at DH once or twice a week so he doesn't get hurt so often while Brian McCann man's first base in exchange for some of their top prospects.

Dare to dream Yankee fans?
