Is Brian Roberts Bronx Bound?

According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, the New York Yankees are close to filling the void at second base by the likelihood of signing free-agent infielder Brian Roberts. Ironically, this is the first career free-agent stint for Brian Roberts, as the 36-year old spent the past 13 seasons donning a Baltimore Orioles uniform.

As a die hard Yankees fan i'll be the first to tell you that I'm not overly confident with a 2B platoon of Brian Roberts and Kelly Johnson. Over the course of his recently expired four year $40 million contract extension signed in 2009, Brian Roberts played just 192 games, as he dealt with a streak of unsteady injuries.

Last season Brian Roberts posted an unappealing .249/.312./.396 line. The once gold glover and All-Star second baseman seemed to gather some rust over the years, and is now an average infielder at best.

From a fans perspective, I can only hope that the addition of Brian Roberts doesn't stop the Yankees from adding another bat to the infield. I'd like to see the Yankees sign Michael Young or bring back either Eric Chavez or Mark Reynolds to provide serviceable corner-stone options off the bench and spot starts when resting Mark Teixeira or Alex Rodriguez (if he isn't suspended by the MLB)
